(11 August, 2020 at 1:42 am PST) edit— This article previously neglected to mention that the App Library has an alphabetical list within the search area, this has been corrected. The section on the App Library in iOS 14 has been revised to be based exclusively on information from Apple, and some minor textual errors throughout the piece have been corrected.

I decided at the end of the last segment that before I wrote the final entry in this series, I wanted to challenge myself to find a category where — without qualification — Android is superior to iOS.

I’ve written about small technical details within broader categories where Android is superior (ease of search, voice assistant, etc.), but I was always forced to concede that iOS won out in the overall category because it shined everywhere else (search unnecessary due to superior design language, privacy concerns with crowdsourced audio models, etc.).

I thought that this was going to be difficult, and to a certain degree it was, until I realized that there were in fact two categories where Android really outshines iOS in every way. I’d been ignoring writing about them because in the first case I assumed it was a bug that would soon be remedied, and in the second case because I thought it was more of a shift in thinking between the design philosophies. In both cases I was wildly incorrect.

Those two categories are:

  2. Home screen organization

These are both issues that are egregiously mishandled in iOS and it’s a shame that I was blinding myself to them throughout this deep-dive.¹ I do get the chance to fix that now though, so let’s take a look at them.

First, I need to clarify something: I’m probably going to get some flack for this but using the word email to be synonymous with Gmail is a hill I’m going to (tentatively) be prepared to die on.

Broadly: when someone says “email” they usually mean a free email provider.² Now, there are options available here but there’s a trope about judging people by their email domain for a reason. There are two acceptable cases for what is after the @ symbol: a professional-looking domain managed by the individual in question, or Gmail.

For that exact reason I argue that Gmail support in iOS should be more than a joke. There is the possibility that this is actually Google’s fault for providing a bad API for persistent network connections — perhaps it drains battery life to maintain a push connection? — but I can’t find any proof of that. Not to mention, Apple has more money than god and is a dominant player in tech; if they can’t get Google to build an API for their operating system over a weekend then what is all that clout for?

Not sure what I’m talking about? Look at this image. These are the configuration options for a Gmail account within the Mail app in iOS — the default email management application.

See there at the bottom? That little message is important. It says “Your iPhone will fetch new data in the background only when on power and Wi-Fi.” (Emphasis mine) Meaning, Mail will only start checking for new email in my Gmail account when I’ve not only got a stable Wi-Fi connection (which is a reasonable requirement I guess), but I also have to have the device connected to power!

This is simply ridiculous. For iCloud emails I can have the expected push-style updates, where as soon as an email comes in I’m alerted about it, but for Gmail I have to wait until my iPhone deigns to bother taking a look. The only workaround for this is to manually open Mail and refresh the inbox that way.

When I read that little note at the bottom of the page I was completely bumfuzzled. I thought I must be misunderstanding things so I decided to click on one of the timed options, hoping that maybe what it meant was that these settings only applied when the device was plugged in and on Wi-Fi. It wouldn’t make sense, but it would be better than this nonsense.

No such luck. Selecting the 30 minute option got rid of the notification about power; but it brought up the alert at the top: “The schedule below is used when push is off or for applications which do not support push. For better battery life, fetch less frequently.”

Battery life is certainly important, but being able to check for emails is not the most battery-intensive of activities. There are options that are almost as old as email itself that allow you to simply authenticate and get a list of headers for the messages in the inbox; far less data than downloading the entire messages themselves. If they don’t match the cached device copy you can notify the user there are new messages, and/or download the full copies depending on preferences.

I can’t think of a reason for Apple to have such terrible support for Gmail. It’s the de facto email provider and has been for everyone since it exited beta; it simply works the best and has the most features. Plus, it’s not lame, like Yahoo or Hotmail or outlook.com, which are the domains of boomers and the technologically illiterate (or the technologically ironic).

The only explanation would be that Apple are trying to push their iCloud email offerings? But I doubt that. It’s not a service that’s well-loved by anyone, and I have literally never met a person who gave me an email address for iCloud — this includes die-hard Apple users. It’s just … not done.

If Apple wanted people to ditch Gmail and start using iCloud email accounts they’d put out a sleek advertisement for it. That would probably work really well. Discouraging users within iOS by making Mail all but incompatible with the platform doesn’t make any rational sense.

Just let me use my email, please! I realize I can install the Gmail app — I have! — but I don’t like having to open a separate app for different email accounts, and I don’t like having to look at Google/Android’s visual design language while I’m using an Apple/iOS device; it’s rather jarring.

I think the reason I neglected to mention this more in-depth earlier is because I was afraid of sounding like those terrible people in forums who think that requesting a feature is the same thing as reporting a bug. They’re whiney and entitled and they don’t seem to understand that the software isn’t designed for them specifically. I’ve come to realize that this isn’t a situation like that though; it’s not out of the question in 2020 to ask for a mail application — a standard utility on every mobile and desktop operating system known to humanity at this point — to be able to use push connections to the single most popular email provider outside of China.

On Android it just works. There’s really nothing to say about it. You connect your Google account and Gmail just works. You get your email notifications the second an email comes in as long as your network connection is adequate; just like email should be.

The other area where iOS is entirely outshined by Android is the home screen.

This shouldn’t be a difficult concept to get right, and I probably wouldn’t have mentioned it because — in my naïveté — I assumed that I was having teething problems with iOS’ home screen as a recent convert. I didn’t even bother to see if other people had the same gripes as me. I’ve mentioned paradigm changes between the OSs before; situations where neither OS is better than the other, they just go about solving the same problem in a different way and the user’s workflow is required to adapt accordingly.

This is not a case like that. This is a case of the iOS home screen being kinda junky.

Here’s how Android does it: everything looks roughly the same to iOS in terms of the permanent dock for icons on the bottom row of the screen, then the pages where you can stick the icons to launch apps. When you install an app there is a setting which will add it to your home screen by default, but this is optional. If it’s on then the app icon will appear on the SECOND page of the home screen, since the first page is usually very specifically set up by the user. If the option is off, the app icon has nowhere to go but the app drawer.

The app drawer is the important thing here. You can access it from any of the home screen pages, and it is literally just an alphabetized list of all the apps on your device so they’re easy to find. The latest version of Android has added a top row to the app drawer that has suggestions of apps that the AI thinks you might want to open at the moment, but immediately after that is an A-Z list of your installed apps.

iOS 14 will introduce a new way to handle home screens, which we’ll talk about in a moment, but the traditional way has just been to take any app and stick it on a page on the home screen. There is no app drawer, just an endless series of pages to scroll through to get to the app you want.

Both of these OSs have the option to clump apps into folders that only take up one segment of space on the pages, which is nice, but only helps so much in iOS. In addition, Android has the ability to add widgets to the pages, of varyings sizes and providing dubious functionality, if you’re into that sort of thing.

iOS 14 will be changing things up a bit with the addition of a few new features. For one, you’ll finally get to add widgets to your home screen pages. Isn’t that fun? If you liked dumb, weirdly-shaped attempts at providing useful information or strange utilities, then this is right up your alley.

The more important change is that you’ll now be able to remove apps from the home screen, relegating those that aren’t used all the time to the new app drawer. It’s not technically called an app drawer, it’s called the App Library, but I refuse to call it that so … app drawer it is.

This is a godsend for anyone who has more than two pages worth of apps installed. No longer will users have to spend time trying to figure out which apps they open the most, juggle them into the best order on the screens, and then throw the rest into an unorganized range of third or fourth through fifth or fifteenth pages, never to be easily found again.

The problem with this implementation, from my experience, is that the app drawer stinks. How does it even work? It drives me nuts. Here, take a look at this stupid thing.

This is an App Library and you can use it, I guess. If you want. No pressure.

First off, I hope you and Apple — or the developers of the app you’re using — decided on the same categorization scheme! Because if not, good luck finding what you want without using the search feature (which defeats the purpose of an app drawer in the first place, by the by).

This is not alphabetical so if you, like me, think that Google Voice ought to be categorized as Social rather than Productivity then you’re outta luck, my friend. Someone, either the app developer or Apple, gets to choose from the categorization schemes for their app and then that’s the folder it goes into. Period.

If you do want an alphabetical list, there is another step you’ll have to deal with: clicking the search bar at the top of the App Library now brings up the keyboard so you can search for an app, and displays a list of all installed apps in a list view that is … wait for it … alphabetical!

In Android you can get to a simple, alphabetized list of all your installed apps with a single swipe up from the bottom of any page on the home screen. In iOS you’ll need to swipe n+1 times, where n is the number of pages you have on your home screen, and then click at the top of the screen in order to bring up a simple list of apps.

I can see how the categorization idea was clever: that’s how I tend to group things myself when I’m doing it manually, but there are simply too many edge cases. As I mentioned, I would place Google Voice in Social rather than Productivity, and all my finance apps ought to have their own Financial category instead of being relegated to the apparent catch-all of Productivity.

Does it sound like it might be faster to use the search bar to find your app than to use iOS’ app drawer? That’s because it is.

The other thing that I find absolutely, hilariously unpleasant here — especially for a company like Apple with such a strong sense for powerfully intuitive interfaces — is that the categories themselves are restricted to a set number of icons.

If there are more than four apps that match a given category, then iOS will split the four spaces within the category up, so that the first three quadrants each have a big app (these are the ones you use most frequently). The fourth quadrant is broken into four more quadrants for the next four most frequently used apps of that category.

When there are more than 7 apps that match a category, iOS decides which ones get hidden within the app drawer layout. Take a look at the animation below, illustrating this quite unpleasant behavior.

Sure hope you know where to look for that app you want to launch.

Observe a click on the bottom-right icon in the Reference & Reading section, revealing a slew of hitherto hidden icons for even more apps that may or may not make sense — to you, the person who is trying to get to an app — to be in that category.

Next, watch a click on the bottom right segment in Entertainment to be treated to the same sort of behavior. “Oh, that’s where it went!”

What is this!?

I do not know, and I do not like it. That’s a subjective statement. This is actually a pretty logical system for organizing apps. Then again, it’s a little too logical.

(Apple has let iOS do the heavy lifting of creating a screen that will definitely have the most frequently used of your apps in every category available and on display, but it won’t necessarily have those apps in the places you’d expect; and because it automatically hides less frequently used apps in each category you wind up having to use the search feature to either type out what you want, or scroll through an alphabetical list.)

The thing that confuses me about this is that it doesn’t seem to achieve any of the goals it might have. As a basic alphabetized list of your apps it takes too many swipes and taps to get there. As a way to de-clutter your pages by categories, user-defined folders already do that.

Since it automatically generates displays based on the most frequently used apps in each category, it defeats itself as a place where you’re likely to want to look. Why? Because if it’s an app a user opens often, the user probably has it already placed on a page so they can get there by muscle memory; they’re not going to go to the app drawer for it.

The reason for the app drawer would be for apps that you don’t use often; apps you don’t want cluttering a page on your home screen, so you’ve hidden them.

(App Library takes the apps that would entice a user to go to it in the first place, and it hides them.)

It turns finding iMovie, which you haven’t used in a year, into a game of “Wait, is it Productivity, Creativity, or Entertainment related?” Then you can click to expand those categories. Or, if you want to be a little faster, you can click the search button and scroll down to “I” and go from there.

Or … you could just stay on the first page, swipe down anywhere on the screen, type “imo” and then click iMovie when Siri displays it as an app suggestion — no App Library necessary.

Because this feature isn’t finalized yet there’s the possibility it will change before iOS 14 is officially released. In that case I will be revising this article but in the meantime, this is how Apple has stated the feature will work, and other outlets are reporting the same behavior. (Apparently they like it! To each their own.)

I can certainly see how this is a neat feature, but it seems self-defeating. I think most users place their frequently used apps on their home screen pages already. The only reason to go to the App Library is to seek out apps that aren’t commonly used, which happen to be just the apps that the Library automatically hides.

Nevertheless, having access to an alphabetical list of installed apps is tremendously useful, and for that I’m grateful. Getting to it could be easier than n+2 interactions though …

There we have it — two large and important categories where Android is better at doing things than iOS. Admittedly the latter problem is solvable just by using the built-in search features of iOS, but the former is inexcusable. In every other way iOS makes users more productive by virtue of being intuitive and reliable. Why Apple has not gotten a useful push notification system in place for Gmail users is anyone’s guess.

The next entry in this series will be the last, I’m sad to say. It’s been enjoyable sharing all the things that I’ve observed as a traitor to the Android ecosystem. All good things must come to an end at some point though, and this comparison is beginning to get unwieldy in length.

It’s time I drew some overall conclusions, and offered some advice for those who, like me, have been using Android for the better part of a decade now but are at least open to the idea of jumping ship if there’s a better alternative available.

¹ I must apologize to my readers in this case; I think it would be fair to say I was not holding the highest journalistic standards when I failed to mention both of these issues in wider categories previously. I have briefly discussed that they were concerns of mine, but they should have been emphasized a bit more, to make it apparent that they were more than just minor problems.
