5.2 Results

Results ≠ Raw Data

1.The results section should:

Summarize what the data show:

Avoid simply repeating the numbers that are already available in tables and figures.

2. Tips for writing Results

Break into subsections(分段), with headings (if needed)（分成具有信息性标题的各部分）
Complement the information that is already in tables and figures

Repeat/highlight only the most important numbers
Don’t forget to talk about negative and control results (对照不同属性的实验组)
Reserve the term “significant” for statistically significant（保留“显著”一词表明具有统计意义）
Reserve information about what you did for the methods section （结果和方法不要混为一谈）

Reserve comments on the meaning of your results for the discussion section

（结果部分是你的数据显示，讨论部分是关于你的数据含义，二者不能放在混在一起）

1) Use past tense for completed actions

2）Use the present tense for assertions(声明、说明 XX数据或结论) that continue to

4. Use the active voice

More lively
Since you can talk about the subjects of your experiments, ‘we’ can be used sparingly while maintaining the active voice. (可减少‘we’的重复)

5.4 Methods

1. Methods and materials

Give a clear overview of what was done
Give enough information to replicate(再现) the study (like a recipe 秘诀)
Be complete，but make life easy for your reader!

You may use jargon（行话） and the passive voice more liberally （不受限制的） in the methods section

2. Verb tense

Report methods in past tense (“we measured”)
But use present tense to describe how data are presented in the paper (“data are summarized as means ±SD”)
