Almost every day we stumble across articles that give a detailed overview of how Artificial Intelligence will take over all the human jobs and will cause a high rise in the unemployment rate. Sure, that’s one perspective of visualizing the future in the AI age but I believe there are many aspects of human nature that cannot be mimicked by an AI bot or a program. And those are the actual core values that make us ‘human’.

I do agree that many of the jobs done right now by humans can be automated and replaced by faster, more accurate, and precise bots leaving very little room for error. The focus of this post will be to go through the jobs involving intricate human qualities that are not threatened by AI any time soon.

We all understand that ‘Change is the only constant!’ This goes for the revamping of jobs too. The advent of technology and the rapid pace of development of devices and services which can replace human jobs in some sectors is not something unheard of. This has been going on since the 18th- 19th century. With the agricultural industry getting transformed with new technological developments, many manual labor jobs were replaced with machines. Then again with the IT and computer revolution, a lot of blue-collar and white-collar jobs were again lost to computers. But a parallel focus point has always been the creation of new jobs along the way too. The new, unheard of before services become a requirement, and if people are in touch with ground reality and they are always on the look-out for the new advancements that are being introduced to the society, then they can always guess timely that their job might become redundant soon. And again, the survival instinct (to earn your sustenance comfortably) pushes them to up-skill themselves. After upskilling, they can be absorbed back, albeit in a different role than before and most of the time, more fulfilling than the previous one.

Let’s study about the pillars which actually make us human and understand how the jobs involving these are the safest as of now and are not going to be replaced by AI anytime soon.

Can you see AI adopting the job of a nurse or a doctor who is helping a patient calm down before a big surgery? or a teacher who is able to gauge the reason for the slump in the grades of a child due to family stress by observing his/her actions? or a harrowed customer calling a bank’s customer service asking for help after he has noticed a fraudulent activity robbing his whole life’s savings? or a surgeon breaking the news to a patient about a life-altering condition like Cancer? No, right!?

Thus, we can conclude that empathy is one of the pillars which makes humans — ‘humans’ and no matter how developed AI becomes, it’ll not be replacing jobs which require high empathy, at least not anytime soon. There are so many important jobs that require intricate human understanding, managing emotions, and until, and unless AI can start to ‘feel’, the jury will be out on this sector!

It takes into account non-linear working methods of healthcare professionals (sometimes the causation of a diseases/symptoms is not clear, for instance: in case of poisoning, sometimes the reason can be hidden in places which an AI bot cannot uncover easily) and how bots cannot uncover the multi-layered challenges involved, they can sure help speed up the process and make it more precise but nonetheless, humans will be required to administer and supervise the results and procedures being undertaken by AI for a long time.

Another job that requires highest level of empathy is the Teaching profession. Teachers are the true heroes as they mold the future generation by guiding them when the children are at the most impressionable age. Technological advancements have always been a boon rather than a bane when it comes to education. In the times of this pandemic, teachers benefitted a lot from the technological advancements. In this area, it can be argued that AI has made significant leaps and is now ready to disrupt the creative industry. So, all the chaos that can be explained using howsoever difficult mathematics, equations, logics, etc. can be taken up by an algorithm or an AI bot. But, can all the creativity be replicated by AI? There have been attempts made and let’s take a look at them.

All the jobs where making judgments constitute an important aspect of the daily responsibilities are safe from AI advancements because they deal in the grey areas of human lives. AI can become an expert in all the black and white areas which can be defined and explained using the mathematics or can be learned by a machine/bot through the reinforcement process but the grey areas are going to be ruled by humans for a long time to come.

In the domain of the judgments that fall under the purview of legal processes, we have seen several cases where the reason for a crime is not something straightforward, sometimes it occurs in self-defense or some other personal reasons. These types of cases require extreme human understanding to be able to define the sentence for a particular negative activity that has been undertaken by someone. We can’t trust a bot with this, right? At least, not yet!

Thus, jobs involving judgment can be deemed safe from the AI revolution.

This is actually an amalgamation of all the other traits that we have discussed above. While planning any event, we have to take into consideration-

There are so many professions that require physical skills and are also one of the highest paying jobs around the world. Take a look at our athletes, footballers, cricketers, wrestlers and you get my point, right? There is no need to even justify that these jobs are safe from AI revolution :p

We shall continue to revel in the sports and rejoice/lament like we have been doing since time immemorial. This is the #1 domain which is not at risk of becoming redundant due to AI superpowers.

This brings us to the end of this post. It's not really tech VS us, at least, not in all the domains. And in the areas where AI is becoming strong, we can upskill ourselves and move to a better position before our job becomes redundant.

This was just a light post to look at the areas where AI is not strong enough yet and is not expected to become strong anytime soon. But, as a data scientist, I would like to end this post with a note that Artificial Intelligence can really be a boon for us rather than being a bane if we are cautious and do not let AI overstep its boundaries in the future as those boundaries are very much in the hands of the developers and the scientists who are taking this domain forward.
