These are uncertain times. COVID-19 has caused global turmoil, resulting in many of my fellow design friends being furloughed or simply laid off. I’ve spent the better part of my evenings on the phone, listening, hearing the pain of their situation, and giving them advice on how best to proceed in their job search.

I felt it appropriate to share my ideas with the larger design community and help where I can.

As each conversation typically goes, these designers are particularly concerned with how they’ll find a job and stand out amongst the large number of other designers looking for work.

(Using a Little Psychology)

During the phone call, here’s how it almost always goes with them:

  • First, they realize they need to get their portfolio updated and spend some time figuring out how to write new case studies

  • Second, they want to clean up and add new items to their resume and start getting it out to the world

  • Third, they spend time on LinkedIn, updating their profile, networking with people, and applying for jobs

These are all wonderful options and a great foundation for a job search. However, there’s a fundamental, underlying principle at work here and it involves a little psychology.

(The Law of the Instrument)

Abraham Maslow was a prominent American psychologist. You’ve likely heard the name. He’s the guy behind Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which gets some popularity in the UX design space.

But, he also gets partial credit for the concept and cognitive bias called the Law of the Instrument. Maslow said this:

“I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.”

The simplest way to put it: The Law of the Instrument is an “over-reliance we place on a familiar tool”. We find what works, or we’ve been told what works, and we stick with that tool in every given situation. If we only have a hammer, everything around us starts to look like a nail. Rather than consider or seek out alternative solutions, we stick to what we know.

(The Proverbial Hammer in UX)

As UX designers, we need to be adaptive to the tools and processes to which we’ll be exposed in our careers. We would never walk into an interview and say, “I only use Sketch”, or, “InVision is the only tool I’ll use to prototype.” Having that fixed mindset is a surefire way to miss out on a job opportunity.

If we rely too heavily on a single tool (“hammer”) as referenced by Maslow, we approach all problems with that tool and assume it’s the answer to everything. If we fail to see the uniqueness of each given problem or challenge, using the familiar tool (ie: Sketch or InVision) will likely produce familiar results.

There goes innovation. There goes creativity. There goes an opportunity.

LinkedIn (Clarification on Your Portfolio, Resume, and LinkedIn)

So how is this different when searching for and landing a job as a UX designer? It isn’t different, it’s just misunderstood.

Let me make one thing very clear. You can and should still bring your “hammer” along when searching for a job in UX. The hammer, in this case, would be your portfolio, resume, and network.

(1. Yes, Polish Your Portfolio)

There’s some debate as to whether a portfolio is necessary. I’ll err on the side of suggesting you have one. Maybe in a leadership or management role, it becomes less of a requirement, but having a landing page for yourself isn’t a bad idea. Ask people to give you critique and feedback on it. Write good-quality case studies and tell a compelling story.

(2. Yes, Refine Your Resume)

We’re told we should have a resume. Make sure there’s a portfolio link on your resume. Update it with relevant information. You’re a UX designer, so design the experience others will have of your resume. Clean it up, use good spacing, pair fonts together well, and include outcomes and accomplishments throughout your professional experiences.

LinkedIn (3. Yes, Liven up Your LinkedIn)

LinkedIn can be a great place for professional connections, or a bloated list of people simply trying to grow their number of connections. Follow relevant UX professionals. Don’t add everyone, be deliberate and include a note when connecting so they know who you are. Tidy up your own profile too, make sure you have a picture and that your professional information is current and accurate.

(The Law of the Instrument in Action)

After you’ve done all that… I’m here to tell you:

That’s not all you can do.

Those three things will only get you so far. There are more tools in your toolbelt than you presently recognize. Broaden your scope. Employ creativity into your job search and it will net you a host of opportunities, friendships, and lasting experiences in your design career.

(Here are 25 more tools you can bring with you, along with your hammer:)

(1. Call someone on the phone)

Our digital dependence and screen addictions have taken away some of the human connection that happens when we get on the phone for a simple chat. Ask someone you respect in the design industry if you can jump on a call with them. Be available if someone wants to talk to you. Especially when confined to your home, don’t underestimate the power of a good conversation.

(2. Do freelance work)

Look for side projects to gain more experience. One of the toughest things for a junior designer to hear is, “You don’t have enough experience.” Well… go get that experience! Is there a local coffee shop that needs a new menu design? Does your local city have a horrendous website? Are you passionate about improving the lives of others? Show it.

(3. Take someone to lunch)

I’ve yet to find someone who doesn’t like food; even more so, someone who doesn’t like it when someone else pays for their food. This might be harder during “social distancing” and COVID-19, but hold on to it as an option when the opportunity becomes available.

(4. Use social media)

Become more active and engaged in social media such as on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and more. It only takes a moment to see that many prominent UX leaders and designers have popular accounts on social media platforms. Make your own and crank out consistent content. Or, follow those other accounts and actively participate in the discussions.

(5. Be a mentor)

You can be a mentor to someone; the reality is, you’re further along in your journey than someone else. It may not feel like it, but you are capable of teaching something to another person. Look for others struggling, asking, pleading for help and jump in. I guarantee you have something to offer and it will change their life.

(6. Find a mentor)

This needs to happen more organically. I wouldn’t suggest being too upfront and asking directly if someone will be your mentor, that seems awkward. Do it naturally by getting to know a person you look up to. Ask them questions, learn about them and their experiences, seek feedback. Do this often and it’ll genuinely develop into a healthy mentorship and friendship.

7.写! (7. Write!)

This is the secret weapon for writing better case studies. You have to practice writing and let go of the fear of publishing your work. Document everything, keep a journal, write an article, start a blog, elaborate on a design quote that interests you. Write about the amazing things a company you love is doing. Did you bomb a recent UX interview? — write about it!

YouTube (8. Record yourself teaching a UX concept and post it to YouTube)

There’s a lot of fear surrounding this one. So many of us hit the record button and we freeze. We lock up and can’t find the right words. We stumble over ourselves and feel nervous in front of the camera. Get past the fear by jumping in with all your energy. You have something, even if it’s a seemingly insignificant thing, you have something you could teach.

(9. Turn your resume into a video resume)

Take the creative approach to a resume and turn it into a video. Get creative with it. Include the elements of your resume but put yourself in the video. Consider your audience — should it be more professional or more light-hearted? — you decide, but have some fun making it!

(10. Read a book and share your thoughts)

There are plenty of UX books (and non-UX books) to keep you busy for the rest of your life. Don’t keep all the useful knowledge to yourself. Read. Share it. Teach it. Reading is a fantastic way to open your mind and encourage more diversity of thought. Get your thoughts and learnings out into the open either in conversation or by publishing your ideas.

(11. Maintain a spreadsheet)

One of the designers I went to school with had great success with a job search spreadsheet. She meticulously kept track of the people she contacted. You could also use a Trello board to track your job hunt progress. Log who you talked to, when, who has your resume in hand, who you know at the company, when you have your next interview, and what your next steps will be. Prioritizing your day and activities will only be to your benefit.

(12. Volunteer in your local community)

(design-related or not) There are plenty of ways you can get involved in your community to lend a helping hand and meet new people, and those new people could introduce you to your next job. You could even find out where the company of your dreams is doing local service and join them! There are always opportunities to volunteer and serve.

(13. Create personalized “thank you” cards)

This is an idea for anyone that takes time out of their day to spend with you. If you met someone over lunch, went to a job shadow, or wrapped up an interview, send them a thank you card. Don’t just buy a cheap one at Walmart — make one! Personalize it based on what you know about the person…and don’t forget to send it to them.

(14. Show up in person)

Again, this article is being written during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing might be in effect, so keep this one in your back pocket. Show up and give them an old school business card and make a human-to-human introduction. We do so much digitally nowadays that an in-person visit might be what really makes you stand out. Leave a nicely formatted resume, printed on heavy paper stock.

(15. Ask for a virtual tour)

Ask someone at the company to give you a virtual tour. It’s less pressure on the host, as they don’t have to accommodate for your visit, but they could still show you all the aspects of the organization. How are teams structured? What’s a day in the life look like? Once you’re able to go to the physical building, you could do one in-person as well.

(16. Job shadow)

You could take the virtual tour request a step further and ask to job shadow someone virtually for an hour. They could walk you through their processes, team dynamics, and show you the tools they use at their company. If it’s appropriate, you could attend key meetings such as design critiques, retrospectives, or standups. Once again, time and circumstances permitting, shadow them in person to get the full experience.

(17. Incentivize friends)

Who doesn’t like a little competitiveness? Start a contest with your closest friends and/or family and have a reward for the one that helps you land a job. What could you give them for their help? How can you make it fun and entertaining for them? You’d be surprised what your network will do once you vocalize the fact that you’re looking. Tell them there’s something in it for them and they’ll jump at the chance to help.

(18. Contract work)

Some companies may not be able to immediately offer you a job, but they’d be willing to have you do some contract work. I know this from personal experience. In your conversations with hiring managers and recruiters, bring it up. You then have a chance to showcase your design/UX chops and possibly win them over — which could result in a full-time position. It’s low risk on both ends and provides you one more way to flex your skills.

Twinkies (19. People love Twinkies)

Normally I’d say people love donuts, but Twinkies work too. Years ago, I helped design a marketing campaign around the launch of a new company website. We promised customers a box of Twinkies for every online order they placed. We couldn’t keep enough Twinkies in stock! The orders poured in! We were constantly buying out the local big box store of all their Twinkies just to keep customers satisfied. People love a gift. Just so happens a box of Twinkies (or donuts) can put a huge smile on someone’s face.

碰巧一盒Twinkies(或甜甜圈)可以在某人的脸上露出灿烂的笑容。

(20. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse)

I’m giving you permission to talk to yourself. The mirror at your house should be getting more screen time than your phone or laptop. You need to practice before an interview. You need to talk about your case studies without having your portfolio pulled up. In the interview, the pressure is on to perform. Rehearse what you’ll say and how you’ll say it.

(21. Attend a conference)

More and more, UX and design conferences are popping up with greater consistency all around the world. The content is fantastic and you’ll undoubtedly meet someone new. If you can’t leave the house or simply can’t afford one, look for virtual conferences. You may not be able to meet people in-person, but you can definitely absorb their inspiring messages and share what you learn.

(22. Do a deep dive)

Before an interview or phone call, you should know as much as you can about the company. Comb their website extensively to understand their product. Know their core values and find out how the company is involved in the local community. Try your best to do a deep dive into the company and use those learnings in your next conversation with them.

(23. Take an online course)

Simply put, there are things you just don’t know yet. Quite often, you come to that realization after losing your job or when applying for new ones. A great way to bulk-up mentally is to take an online course. Plenty of community colleges and other colleges worldwide offer free courses. In the future, look for in-person classes/courses too — again, another great way to meet people and talk about your job search.

24.走出UX (24. Step outside of UX)

What? Yes. You need a break. You need to give yourself time to step outside the UX industry and expand upon your knowledge. To avoid job search burnout, you can:

  • Attend a non-UX conference参加非UX会议
  • Volunteer at your local food bank
  • Write movie critic reviews and post them online
  • Make YouTube videos teaching the world about one of your passions (other than UX)使YouTube视频向全世界传授您的一种激情(UX除外)
  • And so much more!

(25. Design the experience others have of you)

How do others experience you? Are you using your UX skills to design the way other people experience you? Of all the UX design deliverables we’re required provide to stakeholders, remember:

You are your most important design deliverable.

I’ve written extensively about this topic over on The You Experience. Check it out or reach out to me if you want help designing the way others experience you.

(Conclusion)

During these uncertain times, take the Law of the Instrument into consideration. Don’t focus too heavily or get too caught up on only bringing your hammer (portfolio, resume, LinkedIn) to the job search. Use these other 25 ideas as a springboard to launch you into your next position.
