The festival now occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional Chinese calendar, which is the source of the festival's alternative name, the Double Fifth Festival.[1] The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, so the date of the festival varies from year to year on the Gregorian calendar.

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the biggest, most observed festivals in Chinese culture. It is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month on the lunar calendar. Although there are many stories of the origin, the holiday is mainly to commemorate poet, Qu Yuan, who was also a very famous patriot.

端午节的由来是古代有一位博学多闻的官吏屈原，他是一位爱民而且又受到尊崇的官吏，但是由于受到一充满嫉妒的官吏所陷害，从此屈原在朝廷中被皇帝所冷落。而由于无法获得重视，屈原在忧郁的情况下投汨罗江自尽。

The story best known in modern China holds that the festival commemorates the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC) of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period of the Zhou Dynasty.[12] A cadet member of the Chu royal house, Qu served in high offices. However, when the king decided to ally with the increasingly powerful state of Qin, Qu was banished for opposing the alliance and even accused of treason. During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of poetry. Twenty-eight years later, Qin captured Ying, the Chu capital. In despair, Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River.

由于屈原受到居民的爱戴，大家纷纷的划船在江内寻找屈原，并且将米丢入汨罗江中，以平息汨罗江中的龙。虽然他们当时并没有找到屈原，但是他们的行为，直到今天在端午节的时候，仍然被人们传颂纪念着。

It is said that the local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save him, or at least retrieve his body. This is said to have been the origin of dragon boat races. When his body could not be found, they dropped balls of sticky rice into the river so that the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan's body. This is said to be the origin of zongzi.

龙舟竞赛是端午节的传统习俗，当时是为了营救爱国诗人屈原。屈原在公元前277年的农历五月初五跳入江河中淹死，中国居民将竹叶包满熟饭丢入水里。因此，鱼可以吃米饭，而不是英雄诗人。这后来也变成了每年端午节吃粽子的习俗。

The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs to attempts to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan. Chu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens now throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating rice dumplings.

在端午节举行庆祝活动是为了趋吉避凶，祈求整年避免疾病以及邪恶的入侵。与众不同的做法，每户人家将草药挂在门前，并且喝营养的雄黄酒，还有著名的钟馗画像，甚至还有一个传闻，若能在当天中午12点将蛋立起，那么隔一年他将会是个幸运的人。

The celebration is a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year. It is done so by different practices such as hanging healthy herbs on the front door, drinking nutritious concoctions, and displaying portraits of evil's nemesis, Chung Kuei. If one manages to stand an egg on it's end at exactly 12:00 noon, the following year will be a lucky one.
