We do not know how the first fire was       52      .rly fires on the earth were certainly caused by nature, not by Man, some were caused by lighting in a storm;       53       ,perhaps, by the hot material which came out of a volcano. Quite possibly, at time, the heat of the sun set light       54      some dry grass or leaves. t first Man, like other animals, was probably afraid of fire.       55      Great was the power of fire that he feared it and worshipped it. Gradually, however, with his better power of thinking, he overcame his fear. Probably he overcame most of his fear when he       56      how to make fire for himself. Throughout the ages he has learned more about fire, how to control it, and how to use it      57      many ways. Now fire is no longer a master of a god; it is a       58       . We can only guess how       59      first learned that a fire was useful and uses he made of it. y      60      a burning stick from fire which had been started naturally, he could make a fire at his own “home”. He could keep the fire burning by adding more dry grass, leaves and wood. The fire       61      the chief purpose of frightening animals away. He discovered, by some accident, that flesh roasted in front of a fire       62       better. Then he found that roasted flesh would keep longer, without going bad,       63      uncooked flesh. It must have been much later that Man learned to cook food by heating it with      64      water or with steam. He could not use such methods       65      he had learned how to make pots      66      holding water.

Some people think they have an answer to the problem of car crowding and pollution in large cities. Their      67      is the bicycle, or bike. In a great       68       cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have  formed a group       69      Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work, there       70      be fewer cars in the downtown section(闹市区)of the city and       71      less dirty air from car engines. For several years this       72      has been trying to get the city governmen       73      bicycle riders. For      74      ,they want the city to paint special lanes(narrow, often winding roads or ways) for bicycle only on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the       75      lanes as cars, there may be       76      .ike for a Better City feels that if there were       77      lanes, more people would use bikes. ut no bicycle lanes have been       78      yet.       79      thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don’t like the idea-they say it will slow transport. Some store owners on the main streets don’t like the idea-they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less      80     . nd most people live       81      far from downtown to travel by bike.

Today a pilot is totally dependent on what the air traffic controller on the ground tells him. He can’t see enough to be safe. Flight watch is an instrument intended to help him. On a screen in front of the pilot, there will be a map of the       82      around the plane. The pilot’s own       83      level or height and his own plane at the center of the       84      will show up. On the map any other planes in the airspace will       85      as spots of light with “tails” showing the direction of their light. The flight watch map is      86     ,for the other planes are not shown at their true      87      , but at their distances away in flying time. This      88      the problem of fast planes being too far away to be seen      89      likely to make contact in seconds and      90      planes that are close enough to be seen but so slow that there’s no chance of       91      for, say, ten minutes. The pilot will be able to see on the screen whether another plane’s course conflicts with      92      . The screen will show him the flight number of the other plane, so he can contact air traffic control and ask them about the other plane’s course. Then he can take      93      action if necessary. The screen will show him whether his action puts him      94      from yet another aircraft. Technically, the      95      will be quite complex. omputers will be necessary on the ground and      96      each aircraft to enable Flight watch to collect data about the plane courses and to calculate the distances between planes. ut such small computers are now quite cheap, simple and reliable.

Thousands of years ago, in the middle of an ocean, miles from the nearest island, an undersea volcano(火山) broke out. The hot liquid rock piled higher and higher and spread wider and wider. In this way, an island rose up in the sea. s time went on, hot sun and cool rains made the rock split and break to pieces. Sea waves dashed against the rock. In this way, soil and sand came into being. Nothing lived on the naked soil. nd then the wind and birds brought plant seeds, spiders and other little creatures there. Only plants could grow first. Only they, in sunlight, could produce food from the minerals of the soil, water and air. While many animals landed on the island, they could find no food. spider spun its web in vain, because there were no insects for its web to catch. Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence(智力)developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways. It is easy to show that intelligence, to some extent, is something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical twins(双胞胎)they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth. Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

Though they usually have to bear it for at least the first year, most U.S. university students end dorm life as soon as they can. Residence(住校)choices at U.S. olleges and universities are as different as the institutions themselves, but the first-year dorm experience is generally a mandatory rite(仪式)of passage. Many students who leave move into an apartment or share a house with friends.
