You have to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons on your birthday. There’s just so much cute stuff to do! Firstly, Isabelle greets you as soon as the game loads up. But instead of the usual nonsense about her late-night TV habits and favourite stand-up comedians, she wishes you a happy birthday. She called me an island superstar. I jumped for joy; my birthday was during lockdown here in the UK, so I was feeling alone, a little sad, and distant from my family and friends. Isabelle, despite her overbearing peppiness, did cheer me up. Then, I went to a little birthday party with all my favorite islanders…and Diva, who I dislike strongly.

The diving feature was a late addition to the Animal Crossing: New Horizons series. It’s just so cute and fun. Now, you can explore both your island and the surrounding oceans. Go ghost hunting. Don’t worry, it’s not scary. It’s a little cutesy ghost, called Wisp, who you need to help out. He’s lost his body; he thought you were a ghost, got a little bit scared, and was scattered everywhere. Why doesn’t he know he’s a ghost? Is this a sly but interesting comment from the game’s producers about self-awareness? Or is this a reference to when my mum and dad used to call me Caspar the friendly ghost because I’m so pale? Probably the latter.

Check out Blathers and his mad museum of artefacts. You can get your fossils, fish and insects of all sorts assessed here. You can then donate them to the museum, and peruse the donations at your leisure. If you’re the only human person in your island, you’ll be the only donor, so there won’t be anything that’s much of a surprise.

When my friend Jake came to visit Sloth Isle, we went to the museum together; something we had loved to do before lockdown. We once went to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and almost got kicked out when, turning a corner, we suddenly came face-to-face with a large nude self-portrait of Stanley Spencer, and Jake started laughing hysterically. We tried to recreate that experience in the Switch with Blathers and the Academic Painting (aka Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci), but it didn’t work…which brings me on to…

I had such a great time visiting my friend Jake in Valyria. He also came to Sloth Island, where he lent me a ladder, so that I could place Tom Nook’s evil twin children’s shop as far away from my house as possible (i.e. on a precarious cliff edge). Take that, Nook!

Just a week or so ago I finished the game. You would be forgiven for thinking that it’s all over. But there is still so much more to do! Get ready to terraform your terrain; once you’ve upgraded Resident Services in the town hall, you’ll be given an app called Island Designer. With this addition to your trusty Nook phone you can transform your island’s aesthetic. Grass can become beautiful cobblestone, although it’ll cost you some precious Nook miles. Nothing in life is free, I guess. Check out this guide from IGN for some funky ideas.

I don’t really advocate for being a Good Samaritan…and so Gulliver and Gullivarrr irritate me profoundly. However, you can get exclusive pirate-themed stuff when you help them out, so I put up with it for the interior design (more on that, later).

Both of them have lost their communicators. When you find his communicator, Gullivarrr boots it up. He then messages his crewmates, and promptly gets left on read. Relatable content. Thanks to the creators of New Horizons, I promptly start crying after remembering the amount of times I’ve been ghosted. Oh dear Gulivarrr, never mind.

Hanging out in the tailor’s shop is one of the most fun things to do in the game, besides trying to kill Tom Nook. I like to buy multiples of the same thing in different colours, and so my wardrobe is just as basic in the Switch as it is in real life. I wear a lot of really ugly vintage-inspired looks, just like I do in real life. But in real life, my parents rate my outfits (my average is around a 1.5/10) and laugh at them. In the Switch, Hippeux bigs up the fresh threads. Brilliant.

Sometimes there is a really cute prospective-resident milling around, who you can invite to your island, if you have space. Wilbur and Orville are named after the Wright brothers, who were the first to fly an airplane in 1903. Their incarnation as dodos are more than a little ditsy, and shirkers, not workers. ‘Dodo Airlines does not assume responsibility for anything, ever’, as a reference to the general sentiment echoed by airlines is amazing. It’s also a good policy to have in life. I think I might have that written on my gravestone. ‘Lizzie Bestow did not assume responsibility for anything, ever’.
