Originally launched in 1998 and 2001 respectively, Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 are two of the first console games I ever played (admittedly I was about 6 years old when I played them).

Living in Atlanta at the time, my brother and I initially played both games on the Sega Dreamcast before then picking up SA2 on the GameCube. Over the years, I’ve returned to both games many times, through console emulators and more recently Steam.

If you’ve played either of these games (and I hope for your sake you have) you’ll know that overall they have somewhat…aged. From characters talking over other characters, almost comically loud music during some cut-scenes, and absurd character animations, neither game has hidden their age well.

Truly though, these flaws only add to the charm. There is so much joy and nostalgia in these games that I don’t mind the occasional clip out, or that every action in the game is bound to the same button (okay, that still gets me. Seriously, Sega?). This also isn’t just my opinion, as many long-time fans feel that nothing in the (modern) Sonic franchise has come close since (sorry Shadow the Hedgehog). Community demand for a Sonic Adventure 3 almost rivals demand for a Half-Life 3, if you can believe it.

Investment in the games hasn’t stopped either, at least in terms of the fans. There are tons of mods available, with some that update the textures to others that allow you to use any character on a stage, to the infamous randomiser that leads to absolutely bizarre outcomes (e.g. speech in cut scenes being replaced with a disproportionate volume of Omochao advice).

The Sega Sound Team has been through several iterations since the mid ‘80s, making use of a pool of composers, programmers, and instrumentalists, to create a range of iconic themes for characters and stages.

Notably, Jun Senou — who entered as sound producer and main composer for Sonic Adventure, and has continued on as the de facto Sonic soundtrack wizard — worked with his Crush 40 partner/vocalist Johnny Gioeli to record several iconic main themes, including SA’s ‘Open Your Heart’, SA2’s ‘Live and Learn’, and Shadow the Hedgehog’s ‘I Am… All of Me’ and ‘Never Turn Back’ (a personal favourite). Jun Senou has continued to compose and perform music for [as far as I can tell] every Sonic game since, maintaining the classic Japanese-Rock feel in many of the main themes that is so recognisable.

It’s not just the heavy-rock intros that are iconic though; the Sega Sound Team has built a portfolio of characters who each have their own distinct themes that are maintained through the series.

In Sonic Adventure the robot E-102 Gamma — who gradually becomes sentient with the help of Amy — is accompanied by atmospheric techno vibes and jazzy lounge piano riffs that could almost pass for elevator music (e.g. “Theme of E-102y”, “Crazy Robo…Boss: E101-R”). In terms of the general feel of the theme, it’s clearly closest to those of Dr. Eggman (which would make sense, given he’s E-102 Gamma’s creator). It’s difficult to explain exactly how, but there is so much depth to the theme that I’ve not come across something like it since.

You then have a completely different tone set by Tomoya Ohtani, with lo-fi hip-hop beats and rap tracks for Knuckles, with Hunnid-P providing the vocals in the SA2 stages. Each track draws on the environment of the treasure-hunting stage itself, with creepy halloweeney accents in “A Ghost’s Pumpkin Soup” for Pumpkin Hill, and bassy reverb as well as watery vocal filters in “Dive into The Mellow” for Aquatic Mine.

On the Dark Side, despite a mirrored play style to Knuckles, you are offered a completely contrasting interpretation of the stages for Rouge the Bat, with Fumie Kumatami constructing gorgeous feminine tracks often featuring the atmospheric vocals of Tabitha Fair (“Fly in the Freedom”, “I’m a Spy”…). To me, these tracks sit well with the original Casinopolis theme, maybe a nod to Rouge’s infamous gem-hunting profession?

When you start a stage in either Adventure game, the tone is set straightaway. To me, that is clearest in the stages for Shadow the Hedgehog, the primary antagonist in the game (at least until the final story line). He has the honour of being represented by my favourite power partnership on the SA2 soundtrack — Fumie Kumatami, Heigo Tani, and Everett Bradley.

The powerful techno beats, grungy guitar, dark melodic chords, and passionate vocals of Bradley really do the ‘Ultimate Life Form’ justice. The bar is set high with Shadow’s introductory theme “Throw it all away” and continued throughout SA2 before culminating in my favourite song on the soundtrack— the haunting and atmospheric “Supporting Me” for the Biolizard battle. There’s something unique about the way it commands reverb, filters, transitions that puts me right back in that [frustrating] battle, and it suits the tone of the encounter perfectly. It also has a great remix, “Virtual Reality”, in Sonic Forces.

And of course, this couldn’t be an effective exploration of the music of Sonic Adventure without talking about speedy blue himself…“Rolling around at the speed of sound, Got places to go…” you know it!

The first Sonic stage — and the entry point for SA2 — is the legendary, inspired, ‘City Escape’, with Jun Senou and lead vocalist Ted Poley bringing us the punk-pop track “Escape From the City”. No other stage track in the game is quite like this one, which stands alone as a decent early 2000s song in its own right.

Sonic’s next stage ‘Metal Harbour’ has music with clear parallels to ‘Emerald Coast’ from the original SA, but takes the fanfare up a notch to give us those patriotic Navy base vibes. A later Sonic stage, ‘Pyramid Cave’ brings my second favourite song on the SA2 album: “Keys the Ruin”. Takeshi Taneda’s bass and Jun Senou’s minor-set electric guitar solo create a powerful scene totally in keeping with the haunted, industrial, Ancient Egyptian aesthetics. As a soundtrack, it stands out to me above the others set in and around the Pyramid (‘Death Chamber, ‘Hidden Base’, ‘Lost Colony’ and ‘Egg Quarters’), but the sound team maintain a consistent theme.

I think fans are largely agreed that the game could do without Tails’ and Eggman’s mech shooter levels. I also don’t love the music for those levels, but the Sound Team do a great job of constructing themes that are consistent and — again — really nostalgic to return to. As with the other vocalists on the soundtrack, Karen Brake and Paul Shortino do a fantastic job on the themes of Tails and Eggman respectively.

The tunes don’t stop there. In SA2 there are several run ins with G.U.N., each character faces off against their opposite at least once, and we have special appearances from King Boom Boo, Egg Golem and the Biolizard. Sonic Adventure also gave us several major boss run-ins, including 6 iterations of the watery villain Chaos.

In Sonic Adventure there is a recurring concept in some of the music that is associated with the chaos emeralds and the shrine of the Master Emerald; this particular motif also returns in SA2 in the ARK Core (where the centre resembles the previously mentioned shrine). Because Chaos, originally, was a protector of the emeralds, it makes sense that this same tribal beat is present in those boss encounters and I think it’s a clever consistency.

The final theme I’d like to mention is bubbly, child-like, grating Chao music that appears in both games. Unlike ‘Live and Learn’ and ‘Open Your Heart’, this music does not feature on my personal Spotify playlists. Whilst those songs are great in their own right, the Chao garden and race music is purely valued [by me] for the nostalgia it brings. If you use the randomiser mod I mentioned earlier, you could even find the sickly kindergarten music replaced by something like “Mr. Unsmiley”! It’s far better.

In my humble opinion, the Sega Sound Team didn’t just deliver an album that challenged the industry in 2001; they set a bar for gaming soundtracks so high that it hasn’t been met since. Sure, there have been impressive albums for games since (like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Skyrim), but nothing delivers the same punch that Jun Senou and team worked so hard to create.
