COVID-19 made us realize that anything which can potentially be done remotely… will be done remotely. As for everything else? We’ll find a way to get it done remotely as well.

Smart phones, smart tablets, smart hubs. Alexa, Siri, Bixby. Galaxy Watch, Apple Watch, Fitbit. The age of smart products is here, but so is the age of doing everything from a distance. With the onset of COVID-19, there was no better time to start implementing ways to accomplish tasks, no matter how complex, from your very own bedroom.

It started with smart technology and automation. I’m sure we’ve all see them: the commercials that talk about an app connected to a light bulb which can turn on your living room lights before you even walk in the door coming home from work, or the heater that knows exactly when to turn on to keep your bedroom at a perfect 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter. Society as a whole began to open up towards the idea of accomplishing minor tasks remotely, but office jobs and corporate meetings being conducted from your bedroom? That was still unprecedented for the most part.

In the early 2000’s, as smart technology began its crawl into mainstream media, Apple and Samsung took turns at trying to create the innovation of the decade. Society, as a whole, slowly began to warm up to smart technology and using apps for everything. Your phone is no longer just used for calls, it’s a calculator, a gaming console, a note pad, a flashlight, and even a heart sensor. Slowly, as our reliance on technology grew, so too did our acceptance of remotely controlled products. As the generations of iPhone’s went by, we started to realize that telling Siri to “Turn on the bedroom light at 7:00pm” is easier than us having to flick a light switch, or asking Alexa to “Start brewing coffee at 6:00am” is much simpler than having to brew the coffee ourselves. The idea of remote controlled products isn’t starting to sound so strange anymore.

In the late 2000’s and early 2010's, it started with people warming up to the idea of showing their faces on the phone. Snapchat, Instagram, and Vine (if you still remember that), back in the day were the mobile versions of Zoom calls today. Sending your friends brief 10 second videos of what’s going on around you felt a lot better than being stuck in a conference call for who knows how long, but that was the first step in the door for society as a whole. As the younger generations began to use these apps and create viral videos, everyone felt the need to jump on this train. After all, there’s no better way to connect with the younger generation than to join them in their TikTok right?

Fast-forward to the year 2020, a chapter straight out of your New York Times best-selling dystopian novel where the police is a synonym for “big brother”, corporate stores are looted by anarchists, a television celebrity with four strands of hair is our president, and a deadly virus that’s basically asymptomatic for the first two weeks is going rampant in most urban areas, you really begin to rub your chin and wonder: “Well doesn’t it just sound lovely if I sit at home and wait for everything to settle down?” Unfortunately, sitting at home and twiddling your thumbs isn’t the option for those of us who need to work or go to school. In fact, given the gravity of the situation outdoors, it seems like just about anything that can be done at home, should be done at home at this point — which is exactly what the government decided to do. The impetus that pushed remote communication and work into every American’s radar: The Great Quarantine of 2020.

You don’t have to worry about your train/bus arriving on time anymore, the only thing stopping you from missing your meeting is your laptop starting up slower than usual or you accidentally set your phone on silent and missed the conference call. Welcome to the golden age of working/studying from home. Remote office meetings, remote lectures, remote therapy, remote everything. There’s no end to it and in my opinion, it’s here to stay. The resistance towards remote anything was gradually withered away over the years of slow exposure to video communication. Videos aren’t only for entertainment anymore, they’re for meetings, for communication, for marketing, and even for exercise. Don’t just watch someone workout for you on YouTube — how are you going to be held accountable for those two extra push-ups you totally could’ve done? Create a conference call with your workout buddies and push each other to work out from your own living room yoga mat.

It goes without saying that everything has pros and cons. With remote work becoming the new norm, I can’t help but think about arguing for both sides.

Pros: Who doesn’t want to work from home and have a better work life balance? After all, everyone works to improve their quality of life. Not to mention traveling costs are probably going to save you a couple thousand. If we think from the perspective of corporations, we’re talking about a huge cut in expenses for maintaining office space. Last but not least, staying at home has been proven to reduce our carbon footprint.

Cons: Accountability. Are you really working? When you’re not in that Zoom meeting, how much work have you really completed? Isolation. Part of being at an office is bonding with those who have worked hard and studied hard to share that space with you. Humans are social creatures and isolation frequently leads to depression. Make sure you prioritize self-care! Also last but not least, technical difficulties. If your WiFi connection is unstable or your Internet Service Provider turns off on you, there’s almost nothing you can do.

In this golden era where your Amazon Prime product delivers faster than the letter your grandma sent you, it comes as no surprise that remote technology is our norm. COVID-19 ushered this forward and as much as it is a curse, as it very much is horrific and devastating, society’s response to it has helped us find the silver lining amidst the chaos. So next time you take a video call from your friend, Zoom in your class lecture, or join a work conference meeting, just briefly think about the steps that had to be taken for this perfect opportunity to occur — sitting in front of your computer with a crinkled button up and… no pants.
