一、to do和doing的区分

to do和doing都属于非谓语动词。

1)to do叫不定式，一般表示将来性，即to do表示的这件事情还未发生，比如：I want to go home.

很显然to go home这个动作相对于说话时还没有发生。

重点来了：to do除了表示将来性，还暗含一层完整过程的意思。比如上句中的to go home没有特别说明，当然就是回家并且回到家，没有人看到这个句子会理解为回家走到一半又折返。

2)doing有两个称呼、两个来源：现在分词doing，来源于进行时态be doing，所以现在分词doing必然表示正在进行。重点来了：所谓正在进行，其实也就暗含了一层尚未完成的意思

动名词doing，来源于动词本身，所以动名词doing就表示这个动词表示的动作本身

二、to do和doing的用法

与本题相关，可以根据语义把动词分为两类：暗含将来性的动词，记为动词➤，比如plan to do sth.的plan“计划”自然是表示计划将来要做的事

不含将来性的动词，记为动词⊙，比如mind doing sth.的mind“介意”只是表示介意做这件事情本身，过去介意，现在介意，将来也介意，所以并不特别表示将来性

4. 同一个动词 + to do/doing 语义基本相同的情况

有一些动词，加to do或doing语义基本相同，一般不做细致的区分。但是我个人认为，如果要细致区分的话，有的还是有一丝丝区别的，仅以like为例：like doing sth.喜欢做某事(本身)

like to do喜欢/愿意(将来)去做某事，将like稍微改动为would like to do就更明显，表示愿意(将来)去做某事

不过这一类一般就不做这么细致的区分，将两种都当做一种语义也可以。like to do sth. / like doing sth.喜欢做某事

love to do sth. / love doing sth.喜欢做某事

hate to do sth. / hate doing sth.憎恨做某事

prefer to do sth. / prefer doing sth.宁可做某事

①不及物动词 + 状语/补语

从语法上需要说明：上面有一些动词是不及物动词，后面的to do或doing是状语或补语。这里的to do和doing是状语还是补语可能有争议，我的理解如下：

状语比如：不及物动词stop [to do sth.状语]

对比：及物动词stop {动名词doing宾语}

由此引申，题主提到的finish to do sth.理论上并非不可能，因为finish做不及物动词也可以表示“结束”的意思：

假设如下语境，我觉得finish to do sth.也是可以的，比如：We had a long meeting tonight, and we didn't finish to have a bite until midnight.

我们开了一晚上的会，直到半夜才停下来，去吃了点东西。

补语也是有的：不及物动词词组go on

②目的性与将来性

所谓to do表示将来性，如果动作主体是有意识的，也可以说是目的性，比如：We planed to tour around Asia in only two months.

但是如果动作主体是无意识的，就很难说是目的：Run! The wall is about to fall.

小结一下，目的性肯定是将来性，将来性不一定是目的性。
