I Read 500 Books in the Last 5 Years — These Are the Top 5

These are the best books I’ve read since 2017

In 2016, I made a decision to improve my reading habits. I had gotten into the habit of watching more TV than reading books and often not finishing the books that I started. I wanted to do better.

At the beginning of 2017, I embarked on a challenge to read 50 books that year — word for word, cover to cover. I read 75.

I kept at it each year — setting reading goals and tracking my progress through Goodreads. I’ve exceeded my goal each year. And just a few weeks ago, I completed my 500th book.

……

I should also note that I enjoyed most of the books I read. If I took the time to read a book cover-to-cover, word-for-word, I obviously found it at least somewhat worthwhile. Therefore, picking just five of those books to highlight was tough (to say the least).

So, how did I pick the top 5?

I took into account the quality of the writing and the book’s overall literary legacy. I also pondered which books I wish everyone would read. And that influenced this list. But the main criteria I used was how each book impacted me.

And now here are my top 5 books from the last 5 years…

#5: Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear

This is the best book on habits and discipline I’ve ever read. It’s eye-opening, motivational, and practical. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

James Clear burst onto the scene in the last several years as a top blogger and speaker in the field of personal development. He specializes in habit formation and development. If you read this book, you’ll understand why Clear has become so immensely popular.

This is a book that I plan to read every year. It’s that good!

Here are some quotes from Clear’s bestseller:

  • “We tend to imitate the habits of three social groups: the close (family and friends), the many (the tribe), and the powerful (those with status and prestige).”
  • “One of the most effective things you can do to build better habits is to join a culture where (1) your desired behavior is the normal behavior and (2) you already have something in common with the group.”
  • “Positive emotions cultivate habits. Negative emotions destroy them.”
  • “We are not looking for just any type of satisfaction. We are looking for immediate satisfaction.”
  • “Anyone can work hard when they feel motivated. It’s the ability to keep going when work isn’t exciting that makes the difference.”
  • “Professionals stick to the schedule; amateurs let life get in the way.”

#4: Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
#4: C.S. Lewis 的 Mere Christianity

This mid-20th-century classic is a must-read for anyone wanting to better understand Christianity. Adapted from a series of BBC radio talks made during World War II, Mere Christianity is arguably the best (and certainly the most popular) of C.S. Lewis’s nonfiction books on the Christian faith.

It’s hard to say anything good about this book that hasn’t already been said numerous times over the years. Lewis simplifies Christianity in a way that few authors have ever done.

His insights are brilliant.

Here are some quotes from Lewis’s all-time classic:

  • “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”
  • “The battle is between faith and reason on one side and emotion and imagination on the other.”
  • “No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good.”
  • “Everyone thinks forgiveness is a lovely idea until he has something to forgive.”
  • “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.”
  • “The instrument through which you see God is your whole self. And if a man’s self is not kept clean and bright, his glimpse of God will be blurred.”

#3: The Traveler’s Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal Success by Andy Andrews

Think of a present wrapped in beautiful wrapping paper and tied up with a dazzling bow. The present itself is the personal development wisdom imparted by Andy Andrews in this book. The wrapping paper is that it’s presented as fiction. And the bow is that it’s a time travel fantasy.

You’ll enjoy the story and you’ll benefit from the lessons. I certainly did.

Though it was published in 2005, I didn’t experience Andy Andrews’s inspirational novel until 2020 — a year everyone needed some inspiration.

I was so captivated by the story and lessons in The Traveler’s Gift that I was irritated when I had to put it down. Several parts gave me goosebumps. And it’s one of the only novels I’ve read that, at times, had me in tears.

Here are some quotes found in The Traveler’s Gift:

  • “Truth is truth. If a thousand people believe something foolish, it is still foolish! Truth is never dependent upon consensus of opinion. I have found that it is better to be alone and acting upon the truth in my heart than to follow a gaggle of silly geese doomed to mediocrity.”
  • “[Y]ou will never please everyone, nor should pleasing everyone be your goal. For example, to seek the approval of someone who is lazy or jealous is to cast your pearls before swine. You will find that God rarely uses a person whose main concern is what others are thinking.”
  • “I will remember you. But most of all, both of us must remember that life itself is a privilege, but to live life to its fullest — well, that is a choice!”

#2: Animal Farm by George Orwell

Widely regarded as one of the greatest novels written in the English language, George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a brilliant allegorical takedown of communism specifically and totalitarianism in general.

I first experienced this classic as an animated film while in high school. I wasn’t expecting much but was quickly drawn into the story. Later, I read the novel itself. And then read it again in 2020. I’ll probably read it again next year.

Animal Farm is a fable about disgruntled farm animals rising up against their human masters and striving to create a new utopian society that quickly degenerates into hypocrisy, corruption, bloodshed, and despotism.

Anyone familiar with the French Revolution and the Bolshevik Revolution will recognize these themes.

This novel (novella really) is nothing short of masterful. It is a must-read. Indeed, if more people read it, we might avoid some of the social and political nonsense of today.

Here are some quotes found in Orwell’s classic:

  • “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
  • “Some of the animals remembered — or thought they remembered — that the Sixth Commandment decreed, ‘No animal shall kill any other animal.’ And though no one cared to mention it in the hearing of the pigs or the dogs, it was felt that the killings which had taken place did not square with this.”
  • “They had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes.”

I know that’s a lot of “honorable mentions.” Believe me, I could keep going. There were actually many more listed as “honorable mentions” in earlier drafts of this article. It was excruciatingly difficult narrowing the list down to just those mentioned above. I recommend all of them!

And now for my #1 book (other than the Bible) — the book that (again, other than the Bible) impacted me the most…

#1: How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie

Dale Carnegie died in the 1950s — a decade before I was born, and yet few authors have influenced me more than him.

I was first introduced to Dale Carnegie in high school when an uncle gave me a copy of his famous book on public speaking. And I became a fan almost immediately. Carnegie was highly renowned as an expert in communication and people skills. He deserved all of that renown.

I’ve read Carnegie’s How to Win Friends & Influence People numerous times. It’s probably the nonfiction book I’ve read the most. So, naturally, I read it again during this 5-year reading campaign.

And I will likely read it again many more times.

How to Win Friends & Influence People is, quite simply, a masterpiece in the field of personal development.

Even though it’s been updated a few times since Carnegie’s passing, the book is still a little dated. And it’s mainly geared toward professionals. Nevertheless, the principles hold up and what Carnegie says about business relations is almost always true for personal relationships too.

This book should be in everyone’s library. And it should be consulted often.

Here are a few quotes from Carnegie’s classic:

  • “Dealing with people is probably the biggest problem you face, especially if you are in business.”
  • “Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain — and most fools do.”
  • “Criticism is dangerous, because it wounds a person’s precious pride, hurts his sense of importance, and arouses resentment.”
  • “Did you ever stop to think that a dog is the only animal that doesn’t have to work for a living? A hen has to lay eggs, a cow has to give milk, and a canary has to sing. But a dog makes his living by giving you nothing but love.”
  • “Always make the other person feel important.”
  • And on and on. There are so many nuggets of wisdom. One could highlight the entire book. You must read this!

And there you have it! My favorite books of the 500 I’ve read since January 2017. These books made a positive impact on my life, and I believe they can do so in your life as well.

I highly recommend you read each of them. Read them word-for-word, cover-to-cover. And with the nonfiction books, highlight passages and take notes as you read through them. You’ll be glad you did.

Happy Reading!
